The first murder in Greystones, County Wicklow.
The harbour took its shape from the argillite rocks that plunge into the sea which provided a natural buttress for fishermen keep their boats and land catches of fish in relative safety. By the turn of the 19th century, Greystones roared as a Victorian seaside resort.
I love old things, rust, garbage, debris and wrecker’s yards. There is so much colour, so many places to point the lens. Overall there is a sense of the past, a feeling of abandonment, of nostalgia. Occasionally I drive around the county of Wicklow doing nothing else but stockpiling shots for cold and wet winter [...]
Elizabeth Grundy’s case was one of murder in Greystones from a gunshot at such close range that it set her dress on fire. The house she ran into was one rented by a friend and ally of Charles Stewart Parnell.
Gold was discovered by chance in 1775 apparently by a schoolteacher.
There is still gold to be found in the Wicklow’s Hills. In the 1980s I panned for gold in the Varty River with a young geological surveyor. You could say the exercise was successful.
It has taken all of January to assemble images and write pieces for the Journal, of which this is the beginning. As an extension to Wicklowgold.com it has been up and running – dry-running – while being tested which may have frustrated readers I know to have visited.
